In pursuing its mandate, ICIMOD works mainly at the interface between research and development and acts as a facilitator for generating new mountain-specific knowledge of relevance to mountain development. At the same time, ICIMOD attempts to ensure that new knowledge is shared among all relevant institutions, organisations, and individuals in the region.

ICIMOD has been successful in networking with many partners: it has motivated local institutions to deal with mountain problems and to incorporate the mountain perspective which is ICIMOD's trademark.

CEE Himalaya is a new initiative of Centre for Environment Education (a national institution established in 1984, supported by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India and associated with the Nehru Foundation for Development) focused on mountain ecosystems. "Himalaya Initiative" will strengthen CEE's ongoing environmental education interventions in the Himalayan region, initiate new programmes based on the local needs and create awareness and support for sustainable development in the Himalaya.

The primary objective of the Himalaya Initiative is to facilitate efforts towards improving the quality of environment and the quality of life in the Himalayan region, through education and communication. Initially the effort will reach out to Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) and, later on, to other parts of Himalaya in the neighboring countries. It promotes a better understanding of mountain environment and advocates for the due importance and recognition mountain areas should get for extending valuable ecological services, being fragile, and important for the global ecosystem functioning. It identifies and popularizes appropriate technologies in order to stop ecosystem degradation. It respects and recognizes the value of traditional indigenous knowledge and builds upon it with the inputs of modern science and technology. It establishes links amongst mountain communities using information and communication technologies for increased sharing of information, knowledge and resources.
